R. Fishler and J. Sznitman have submitted a provisional patent. The invention includes a microfluidic device manufactured using standard soft-lithography techniques that is designed to mimic the geometry of a section of the pulmonary acinus. This device will enable fast and simple assessment of alveolar deposition of inhaled drugs or pollutants inside the human acinus, providing results that a more reliable than simply assessing particle size, yet much cheeper than in-vivo experiments.
